When a recipe calls for an onion,it can usually be replaced by a leek.

Leeks are an allium, which makes them part of the onion family. They have the smell and sharpness of an onion but are far milder and less sweet. They are easier to use and prepare, and are not wet and slippery when peeled like an onion, plus they dont make your eyes water.
